Planning

Step 2

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day whispering, 'I will try again tomorrow.'

โœจ The next year

Before diving into each of the Life Areas, take a step back and plan the next year at the most abstract level. In this section, you will complete the following:

In terms of the goals, you may want to circle back this section after having completed all the Life Areas.

๐Ÿ–ผ Set a theme for the next year

What do you want to be like? The year of freedom, independence, creativity, discipline, or what not.

Year of ___

๐ŸŽฏ Define your focus areas

Rate each of the Life Areas on a scale from 1 to 7 in terms of their importance to you. Ideally, you should have 2-3 top areas that will be your focus for the next year.

Rate each Life Area in terms of its importance to you

Having defined your focus areas, take some time to reflect on the high-level questions below on the ideal future:

What would you like the next chapter of your story to be?

  • What would your ideal life look like?
  • What would be perfect?

๐Ÿฅ… Set your major goals & systems

In this section you are prompted to fill in 1-5 major goals for the next year along with an associated system that will drive you towards that goal. Try to phrase the goals as SMART goals (or, at a minimum, avoid vague resolutions). You can also press pause to read more about language of Goals vs Systems.

Conventional wisdom dictates that goals should be "SMART", that is
  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Actionable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound
However, for this exercise it suffices that the goals are thought through, not vague, and something you could see yourself realistically accomplishing with good planning, effort, and God's grace

Example: In the Life Area of Finances & Money, I will set-up an automated savings system with the goal of saving up $5,000 by this date. Can be "SMART" (Resources), can also just be a specific goal.

When we set goals, we're told to be realistic. So, we tone down our ambitions. Chef Grant Achatz decided he wanted to open the best restaurant in the country. "Anything else would be a failure." What is the biggest, boldest, most ambitious goal you could think of?

๐Ÿ™ Values & Purpose

Done is better than perfect

In this section you should build on your notes from your review to structure some thoughts for the next year. How will you bring this Life Area to the next level? Remember which of your Life Areas were a priority - you can't do it all.

๐ŸŒˆ The ideal state / What do you want this area to be like?

  • What would be awesome?
  • What would this look like if it were perfect?
  • What would your ideal life look like?

๐Ÿ›ค Next steps / What are your next steps to bring you closer to your ideal state?

  • What is something you've always wanted to do here?
  • E.g. new projects, goals, systems, ...

โญ Quick wins / What are some "quick wins" that can help build momentum?

This could include activities that would quickly move you in the right direction and build some momentum for yourself. Quick wins are usually (but not always) also small wins, so don't expect too much.

Examples: Books you could read to better inform yourself; people to reach out to; 'frogs' to eat; things to write; and so on. They don't have to be huge victories, but quick & easy to get a move on.
